Having A Safe And Happy New Year

While you are enjoying the holiday season, it is important to remember that, even when you are having fun, you must be aware of safety issues for yourself and your family.  The holidays are a happy time for most, but for some, accidents and injuries take the joy out of the season.  In order to protect yourself and your family during this time, it is important to remember safety tips that can help you have an injury-free holiday!

  • Practice safe driving. It stands to reason that when many people are in a hurry on the roads, you will face careless drivers.  It is also a fact that this time of the year often sees less-than-optimal weather conditions, such as snow, ice, and sleet.  When everyone is rushing and the weather is bad, accidents are even more likely than usual.  Additionally, many people still fail to consider others when they drink alcohol at holiday parties and then drive.  Drunk driving always increases around this time, so practice defensive driving and be aware that other drivers might not be at their most alert.
  • Watch out for slippery sidewalks. Walkways, steps, and sidewalks become hazardous in icy conditions. Be sure that you are careful to use small steps, sand your walkways, and avoid traveling by foot when possible during icy periods, especially after nightfall.  Watch yourself when you come in and out of a building, as well; entryways can be wet and slippery.  Taking a few moments longer to walk to your destination can help prevent a serious accident.
  • Avoid uncertain situations with pets. You may be visiting others in their homes during this season, so be mindful of dogs and other pets, especially around children.  Children love to pet dogs, but it is important to remember that not all dogs may be friendly.  If you have a pet, be sure it is under control at all times, particularly when new people may be arriving at your home.  Animals are often stressed and anxious by visitors, so consider boarding or putting the pet in a room away from visitors to avoid an unfortunate accident.
