Halloween is just around the corner, and according to reports, pedestrian injuries and fatalities are usually high during the celebration. Advice for motorists on Halloween
Whether they’re out trick-or-treating or on the way to and from a Halloween party, more people than usual will be out and about.
- Put cell phones away and turn the radio down to avoid distracted driving.
- If you’re celebrating Halloween with alcohol, be sure to have a designated driver or arrange for a taxi or Uber ride.
- Be on the lookout for children walking on curbs, medians, and roadways.
- Extend your scanning perimeters for children by looking into yards and onto front porches.
- Keep it 5 mph below posted speed limits, be sure to obey all signals and traffic signs.
- Keep your headlights on – even in the daylight.
Halloween safety tips for parents
- Make sure your trick-or-treater is wearing reflective tape on their costumes and on their treat buckets.
- Have an adult chaperone escort and supervise children under 12.
- Teach your children to travel only in familiar areas and on known routes.
- Place a flashlight with fresh batteries facedown in the child’s treat bucket, but never shine it in the face of oncoming drivers.
- If sidewalks aren’t present, teach children to walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic.
- Instruct children to only cross streets at a corner, never mid-block or between parked vehicles.
