New Compound Could Block TBI Damage

According to researchers at the University of Iowa, there may be new hope for combat veterans returning to the United States with Traumatic Brain Injuries or TBIs. Many servicemen and women suffer TBIs when exposed to blasts from bombs and Improvised Explosive Devices or IEDs.

According to a report, up to 20 percent of the U.S.

servicemen and women deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq have been affected by TBI. TBI can have long-term neurological problems including cognitive decline, psychiatric issues and even symptoms similar to those associated with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Researchers have found that mice treated with a group of compounds known as the P7C3 series as late as 36 hours after exposure to a blast strong enough to cause TBI gained protection from common harmful effects of TBI. The report specifically refers to those injuries that may damage memory, movement and learning abilities.

Currently, the lack of neuro-protective treatments for TBI is a serious concern, not only for combat veterans but also for those in accidents who suffer these types of injuries. If these treatments prove effective, the 36-hour time window in which they can be applied would allow virtually all injury sufferers to receive treatment within the necessary timeframe, reducing the number of long-term effects of these injuries.

Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury

There are several ways in which a person can suffer from TBI, including combat-related injuries. Slips and falls account for over 35 percent of TBIs here at home, while automobile crashes account for over 17 percent of these injuries. Automobile accidents are the leading cause of TBI-related deaths. People 65 and older are more susceptible to falls and make up a larger percent of fall-related TBIs, while younger people, particularly males, make up a large portion of auto-related TBIs.

What Should I Do If I Suffered A TBI?

If you or a loved one is suffering from TBI due to the negligence of another driver or a property owner, you may be entitled to financial compensation related to medical treatment and long-term disability. If you have recently been diagnosed with TBI, do not delay in seeking financial compensation. Waiting to file a claim may result in loss of rights and potential compensation.
