Progesterone Not Helpful in Treating TBI

New studies have concluded that, despite the early promise of progesterone treatments for TBIs, the administration of the hormone is not significantly helpful to the outcome of these cases. The newest study in this regard was recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine and involved a large randomized clinical trial of severe TBI patients. Despite the success of progesterone therapy in animal models as well as data from smaller studies, the large study found no significant benefit of this treatment for TBI patients.

TBI Statistics

Traumatic brain injury or TBI affects nearly 1.7 million people in the United States every year. Severe injuries have been estimated to cost 76 billion dollars annually. Severe TBIs may result in death, disabilities such as paralysis and loss of motor function or speech ability.

The early progesterone trials offered hope that a simple treatment might be able to stave off some of the serious problems associated with TBI, but unfortunately this new study seems to definitively put a stop to that hope. While other treatments are being tried, many victims of serious TBI wait patiently for a breakthrough that may offer them hope for the future. In the meantime, they are forced to deal with curtailed abilities, pain and daily suffering, often due to someone else’s negligent or careless behavior.
